The Long and Winding Road
It all began in 1978. I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in Psychology and spent the next few years working in social services – entry level positions in childcare/youth and mental health programs. When the BC Ministry of Human Resources initiated the first Child Abuse Helpline (Zenith 1-2-3-4) I joined the team as the coordinator of the first Child Abuse Prevention program in British Columbia. This was a school-based program that focused on talking to children about child abuse, and encouraging them to call the helpline if they needed assistance. This was my first move from front line work as a counselor, to 'educator'. It was a better fit. A series of events led to my volunteering to produce a television program for the deaf about child abuse. When I saw the program go to air I knew I had found my destiny. And there was no turning back.
